  1. Ask for a certificate of insurance sent directly from their insurer, naming you, showing general liability coverage. If they have employees, ask about workers' compensation too. This is the one credential that actually protects you if a driver slides into your mailbox or a shoveler gets hurt on your steps.
  2. Get the trigger depth in writing. Some contracts plow automatically at 2 inches, others wait for you to call, and 'we'll be there' means nothing without a number attached.
  3. Ask what happens in a multi-day storm. Per-push seasonal contracts can run out of visits fast in a bad winter; know whether you're capped or covered.
  4. Clarify what's included: driveway only, walkways, mailbox apron, and whether salting is separate. This is where seasonal-contract billing disputes start.
  5. Get a phone number that's answered at 5am during a storm, not just a website contact form. That's the real test of this trade.

Ask what happens if the season blows past the number of visits a seasonal contract assumes.
