How these pages work

Short version: the lists are public record, the recommendation is mine, and money buys neither

Where the lists come from

The A-to-Z list on each trade page is pulled straight from The Hunterdon Scoop business directory, which is built from public sources: state license and registration records including the NJ Division of Consumer Affairs registry, business filings, and open business listings. It is every company in the directory that does that kind of work, in alphabetical order. Nothing is held back for being new, small, or unknown to me.

Why nothing here is ranked

A list of names in alphabetical order is honest about what it is. Appearing on one of these lists is not a recommendation and not a grade. It means the company exists and does that work. That is the entire claim the list makes, and it is why the order can't be bought, gamed, or argued about.

The one name is a different thing

The one-name service is where an actual opinion lives. You tell me the job and your town, I send back one name, within one business day, free. Behind that sits my own file on local companies: registration status, complaint records, what neighbors report, who has done this exact job nearby. That file stays private. Publishing it would turn a useful judgment into a public scoreboard of local businesses, which is exactly the thing I am not building.

What money buys

Nothing on these pages. No paid placement, no sponsored slot, no paying to be listed and no paying to be the name I send back. The pages are paid for by the newsletter. If that ever changes, it gets labeled where it appears and this page says so first.

Cost ranges

The planning ranges on the cost-check pages come from published New Jersey pricing sources, named on the page next to the range. They exist so you can tell a normal quote from a strange one. No company pays to change them.

Mistakes

If something here is wrong, tell me and I fix it. Email corrections@hunterdonscoop.com and confirmed errors get corrected in place within 48 hours. Businesses get the same treatment as readers: show me the document and the page changes. Listing corrections, additions, and removals go to the same address.
