The three weeks from October 31 to November 20 carry 505 of the 3,189 deer strikes, or 15.8 percent of the year in 3 of 52 weeks. A flat year would put 5.8 percent there, so the run is 2.7 times its share. The single busiest week is the week of November 7, with 188 strikes.

Two things land on top of each other at that point in the calendar. New Jersey's Department of Environmental Protection puts peak deer mating season from late October to mid-December, when bucks pursue does and deer are likelier to enter a road suddenly, and it notes that the end of daylight saving time puts many commutes into the hours deer are most active (NJDEP and NJDOT, October 2024). Weeks are ISO weeks, which start on Monday. The 12 strikes that fall in an ISO week 53 are counted in week 52, so the bars still add to 3,189.

Where this comes from

Every crash New Jersey DOT logged in Hunterdon County from 2018 through 2022, taken from the department's annual county crash tables. Crashes are placed by the coordinates on the report, or by route and milepost through NJDOT's linear referencing network where there are none, then grouped so crashes within about 150 meters of a spot's busiest point count as one spot: a dot marks a patch of road, not an exact point. Deer strikes are counted along a whole route stretch instead, because they spread out rather than gathering at a junction. 15,109 of the 16,991 crashes are on the map, or 89 percent: 1,485 reports carry no usable location at all, and another 397 carry one that lands outside the county line, so both groups are counted in the totals above but not drawn.
