Where the Flock cameras are
Flock cameras are automated license plate readers: they photograph every plate that passes and log the plate number, the time, and the place. This map shows the 59 reported in Hunterdon County.

Zoom in until the grouped counts break apart, then click a pin for the operator, the town, and the link the report came from. Of the 60 pins, 57 are tagged Flock Safety, 2 another plate reader brand, and 1 is a surveillance camera not confirmed as a plate reader. 1 of the 60 is on private property (a Home Depot); the rest name a police agency or no operator at all. Coordinates come from crowdsourced reports and can be off by a pole or two, and a camera can be moved or taken down without notice. Nothing on this map has been independently confirmed yet, so every pin reads as reported. Want to look beyond the county line? DeFlock's national map covers reported plate readers across the entire U.S.
By town
Town comes from the camera's coordinates checked against the Census municipal boundary, not from the report. Pick a town to move the map to its pins.
Where this comes from, and what it does not say
The pins come from OpenStreetMap, the crowdsourced map anyone can edit. Plate reader locations there are largely contributed through DeFlock, a volunteer project that maps automated plate readers and pushes what it finds back into OpenStreetMap. That means the underlying reports are from members of the public who saw a camera, not from any agency's records.
Those points were cross-checked against the Electronic Frontier Foundation's Atlas of Surveillance, which tracks documented police surveillance technology. The Atlas has one Hunterdon County entry: the Hunterdon County Prosecutor's Office, which received a $184,200 grant from the New Jersey Attorney General's Office in 2023 for plate reader technology, part of an award that went to agencies in all 21 counties. The Atlas lists no camera locations, so it confirms the county has a plate reader program without saying where any unit sits.
5 of the pins name an operator: Readington Township Police Department, tagged that way by the OpenStreetMap contributor who added them. That is the only municipal police department named anywhere in the data for this county. One pin names a private operator, a Home Depot on Route 202, and is marked private on the map so a retailer's camera is not read as a police one. The rest carry no operator tag at all, which is why most pins say the operator is not named.
Every pin on this map is "reported." Reported means somebody says a camera is there and we have a link to that report. It does not mean we went and looked, and it does not mean an agency has confirmed the camera exists, who runs it, or whether it is switched on. A pin will only move to "confirmed" when a public record, an agency response, or a first-hand check ties that specific location to a specific camera.
What this map cannot tell you: how long any of these systems keep the plate data, who they share it with, or whether a given camera is currently working. New Jersey State Police publish statewide plate reader audits, and public records requests to individual departments are the route to those answers.

Know one we haven't mapped?
Tell us where you saw it. Most useful is a road plus something fixed nearby: a pole number, an intersection, a driveway it points at. We check before anything goes on the map, and we will not put your name on it.
